Every year or so, this area starts to boil, and the level of the mud in the middle goes up and up.  After some time a massive explosion takes place which can be seen from Viqueque.

 Then it calms down for about another year.  It is not seasonal.   The ground around the area is warm, and gets warmer if you dig a little.
