Almost every village in East Timor Leste has someone who is in Dili, or abroad.  Most Dili families have strong links with their home districts, owning land and visiting regularly.  Land is usually owned by Families  rather than individuals.

The family is very important here and you will find that they don’t envy westerners who are can appear isolated and have weaker family connections than they.  That said someone who has lived in Portugal for decades will consult a Matandok or Witch Doctor.   It is said the population is 90% Catholic and that there is a small traditional religion base.  This writer thinks many Timorese have these religions side by side, and that the stronger influence in the life comes from traditional religion.  The catholic church has much power here and cannot be disregarded.
