The roads in Timor Leste have many deep potholes even in the capital. Many villages create “sleeping policemen” and there are “chicanes” outside some police and military quarters.

In the rainy season you go between many towns through Dili, and may have to wait for rivers to subside before crossing some parts. Bridges get swept away.

Insurance options are limited for pure self drive and available through Rentlo. Some cars available come with a driver and if the car is involved in an accident it is the firms responsibility to sort it.

Accidents
As in many countries where local communities have a lot of autonomy, if you hit someone, you are advised to carry onto the next police station and report in there. The locals notice number plates.
If you hit livestock you will be expected to buy it.
